Transitioning to college from high school or the workforce can be a daunting task. That is why Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKYCTC) is launching a new initiative to make the experience of starting college easier.

The college will host several workshops providing helpful information and guidance to first semester students, assisting them in adjusting to campus life. These workshops will include informal sessions offering tips on how to be successful in college.

The sessions are hosted by the Pre-Employment Transitioning Services (Pre-ETS) at SKYCTC and are available for incoming students who meet one of the following criteria:

  • Individuals with a documented disability, IEP, or 504 plan
  • Individuals potentially eligible for Office of Vocational Rehabilitation services
  • Individuals with a Program Service Plan (PSP) who are limited English Proficient (LEP)
  • Foster youth and independent living youth
  • DJJ students

“These sessions are going to be a lot of fun in addition to giving the students practical information and guidance that will help them succeed at SKYCTC”, says Hope Armstrong, Pre-Employment Transitions Specialist at SKYCTC.

KCTCS Pre-ETS is a partnership with the Education and Workforce Cabinet’s Office of Vocational Rehabilitation to serve Kentucky students with disabilities age 14-21 in public or private schools, home schooled students, postsecondary institutions, adult education programs, and alternative school settings such as Juvenile Justice.   We want to help students plan for the future and prepare for careers that match their skills, abilities and interests.

To meet the employment needs of students with disabilities, KCTCS Pre-ETS provides pre-employment transition services which include:

  • Post-Secondary Counseling and Exploration
  • Job Exploration Counseling
  • Workplace Readiness Training
  • Self-Advocacy Instruction
  • Work-Based Learning Experiences

These services are designed to make a difference and to be an early start at job exploration for students with disabilities when making the transition from secondary to post-secondary education/training and competitive, integrated employment.
