WILL DOWNING HAS DUAL COLLEGIATE ALLEGIANCE

Will Downing’s grandfather was President of Western Kentucky University – so it’s no wonder why WKU has a special place in his life. Now, Downing has found a home at Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKYCTC), too.

Will has taken advantage of the Joint Admissions program between WKU and SKYCTC. With Joint Admissions, Downing lives in the dorm at WKU, attends WKU ball games, is in a fraternity, participates in all aspects of WKU campus life, and takes classes at SKYCTC.

“A lot of my friends in high school were telling me that anyone thinking about a career in healthcare should begin at SKYCTC,” said Downing. “My high school teacher Ms. Sowders was always talking about SKYCTC and why it was a great place to get training for anything healthcare related,” Downing said his dual credit classes in high school helped prepare him for college and his future career.

After he receives his Associate in Science Degree from SKYCTC Downing plans to transfer his credits to WKU and major in Healthcare Administration. Eventually, he wants to be in the field of Geriatrics.

“I encourage all my high school friends to take advantage of the Joint Admissions Program with SKYCTC and WKU,” says Downing.  “Not only are there benefits of smaller classes at SKYCTC and being able to live on campus at WKU, but SKYCTC offers financial savings while being able to take the same classes you would be taking at a four-year college.”

Another advantage that Downing mentions is the close relationships you build with your teachers at SKYCTC. “You can tell it’s not just a job to earn a paycheck for the instructors here, they really do care about you and want you to succeed.” Jumping into a four-year can be intimidating. If I have a problem, I can go to my teacher,” says Downing. “Here you interact with people of all ages who have experienced all manners of real-life situations,” says Downing. “I have one lady in my class that is in her eighties and SKY is giving her that chance to grow and succeed.”

In addition to being a full-time student, Downing is involved with the United Way, the Baptist Campus Ministries and the Christian Student Fellowship Organization.
