BOWLING GREEN Ky.-Things were magical today at Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College in Bowling Green.
The Harry Potter Alliance is an international organization that brings in fans of the series to raise awareness of issues in the community, including bullying, and support for those in the LGBTQ community.
For $25 , anyone could participate in a 5K walk to raise money for the Harry Potter Alliance.
Some of the money is then sent back to the SKYCTC chapter of the Alliance, where they can use it for events and projects.
A member of the alliance and a sociology professor at SKYCTC, Bertena Varney says using fandoms like Harry Potter is a great way to get people involved in good causes.
“I find that the more that you can take issues from society and make them not as harsh by using fandoms, you’re still bringing about the awareness, and kids and people can relate,” Varney said.
