Digital Literacy Step Exam Procedures


Complete Digital Literacy requirement information.

The KCTCS catalog states, All AA, AS, AFA, AAS, and diploma students graduating from KCTCS must demonstrate digital literacy by one of the following means within five years preceding their current admission to a KCTCS college:

Scoring a minimum of a 75% composite score on the digital literacy exam, or

The test out exam for digital literacy is the iC3 Fast Track Exam. The exam will have 70-75 questions to be completed within 50 minutes using a computer. However, the student should allow him/herself at least one hour for the exam. The IC Fast Track is based on the globally recognized Certiport IC , the world's only globally recognized standards-based certification for fundamental computing and Internet skills.

To prepare for the exam, students should review iC3 books available in the SKYCTC Library in Building C, Main Campus. Students should also visit Certiport for exam competencies and practice exam questions.

The cost of the exam is $45 (voucher plus testing fee). Students purchase a voucher in the SKYCTC Bookstore to take the exam. Students register for exam appointment through

The proctor will submit the student s score to the Registrar. If the student s score is 750 or above, the student s transcript will be noted as P for CIT 95. CIT 95 is the course noted for Digital Literacy.

Achieving the IC3 Certification, or

The iC3 certification exam is a global, industry created exam testing digital literacy skills to function successfully, effectively, and productively. The newest exam is called the Global Standard 4 which addresses several new digital literacy concepts such as:

  • social media
  • collaboration
  • digital devices
  • research fluency
  • critical thinking
  • cloud computing

IC certification includes three separate exams on the following areas:

  • Key Applications
  • Computing Fundamentals
  • Living Online

To receive the iC3 certification, the person must take and pass all three areas. Each area has 70-75 questions. Students are given 50 minutes to take each area s exam. The student should allow at least three hours to take all area exams.

To prepare for the exam, students should review iC3 books available in the SKYCTC Library in Building C, Main Campus. Students should also visit Certiport for exam competencies and practice exam questions.

The cost of the exam is $150 (vouchers plus testing fee). Students purchase the iC3 vouchers in the SKYCTC Bookstore or online at to take the exam. Students register for exam appointment and pay testing fee through

If the student passes all three areas of the exam, the student will receive a certification through the U.S. Mail in approximately four weeks. Once the certification is received, the student should present a copy of the certification to SKYCTC Registrar. The iC3 certification will give the SKYCTC student three credits for CIT 105.

Articulating credit from another institution which has demonstrated compliance with the above course criteria as identified by the registrar of the receiving college in cooperation with the digital literacy faculty of the receiving college, or

If the student completed a computer course at another college or university, the SKYCTC Registrar will review the student s post-secondary transcript for Digital Literacy. If the student completed a computer course within the last five years that meets the KCTCS Digital Literacy competencies, the Registrar will note Digital Literacy completion on the student s KCTCS transcript. The transfer will be noted as CIT 95 or CIT 105 depending on the course completed at the other institution.

Receiving credit for an approved KCTCS digital literacy course, or

The KCTCS catalog identifies the courses for Digital Literacy; however, SKYCTC only offers CIT 105 and OST 105. These courses are available on all campuses and online. Both courses have a pre-requisite of RDG 20. The KCTCS catalog provides course descriptions for CIT 105 and OST 105; however, the course competencies are provided within this document.

Our digital literacy courses are not basic computer courses. To enroll in a 100-level computer course, the student should already know how to create and save a file and folder; as well as, have keyboarding, mouse, and Internet skills. Students do have the option to step out of CIT 105 or OST 105 (complete a Step Test).

A Step Test is an exam that provides an opportunity to demonstrate mastery of course content and receive credit. The CIT 105 or OST 105 step test has 125 questions to be completed within 2 hours. Students that pass the test with at least a 70% will receive 3 credit hours for the course. The cost of the exam is $45 (voucher plus testing fee). Providing documentation of successful completion of other certification exams as approved by KCTCS.

CIT 105 Course Pre-requisite: RDG 20 or Consent of instructor

CIT 105 Course Description: Provides an introduction to the computer and the convergence of technology as used in today s global environment. Introduces topics including computer hardware and software, file management, the Internet, e-mail, the social web, green computing, security and computer ethics. Presents basic use of application, programming, systems, and utility software. Basic keyboarding skills are strongly recommended. This course fulfills the Digital Literacy requirement.

CIT 105 Course Competencies/Student Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student can:

  1. Describe basic computer functions and use correct computer terminology.
  2. Use a course management system.
  3. Utilize computer technology as a tool to access, manage, prepare, and present information.
  4. Identify trends in information processing and new emerging technologies.
  5. Explain the impact of computers upon society including effects of social technologies, green computing, dangers of excessive use, and disposal of obsolete equipment.
  6. Identify and analyze ethical issues such as copyright, privacy, and security as related to computing.
  7. Explain the difference between application, programming, system, and utility software.
  8. Use a graphical user interface-based operating system to manage files, folders and disks.
  9. Use application software packages to prepare basic documents, spreadsheets, databases, and presentations.
  10. Describe and explain basic data communications and network technologies and functions.
  11. Identify and use basic E-mail and Internet functions and understand their capabilities.
  12. Describe globalization and challenges including technological barriers, electronic payments, and varying cultures.
  13. Describe cloud computing and its impact on business and personal systems.

OST 105 Course Pre-requisite: RDG 20 or Consent of instructor

OST 105 Course Description: Introduces and familiarizes student with essential computer concepts and terminology including operating systems software, multitasking concepts, disk and file management and telecommunications. Teaches basic competencies in word processing, electronic spreadsheets, presentations, databases, and online skills including networking, electronic mail, Web browsing, and Internet research. (Key 20 wpm is recommended.) This course fulfills the Digital Literacy requirement.

OST 105 Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Identify types, functions, and costs of computers, hardware components and peripherals.
  2. Identify operating systems concepts and explain/identify how software and hardware work together.
  3. Identify general concepts of different software categories and distinguish software for various tasks.
  4. Manage and control the Windows desktop, files and storage mediums.
  5. Identify and perform common program functions such as starting and exiting Windows, changing application settings, printing, and utilizing sources of help.
  6. Create, edit, and format word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation documents.
