SKYCTC Student of the Semester - Margaret Hostetler
Each semester Southcentral Community and Technical College’s (SKYCTC) Celebrations Committee votes on students who are nominated by faculty for their exceptional work and dedication to their studies. This past semester Margaret Hostetler was recognized by all committee members for her numerous qualifications.
Margaret is a first-generation college student studying Computer and Information Technology in the Information Security Track. She is active in Phi Theta Kappa and has completed many voluntary training sessions at SKYCTC.
“Earning a college degree has always been a dream of mine, but as a first-generation college student, the logistics of completing that felt unattainable to me,” said Margaret. “I didn’t even realize SKYCTC existed until a close friend mentioned it to me and suggested it would be an excellent choice to start my higher education. I realized that a quality education can be both affordable and flexible.”
Margaret is also an intern in SKYCTC’s IT department of the college and is the Associate in Applied Science student representative for the Student Government Association, as well as serving as a committee member participating in website design and registration creation for Women in Computing Celebrations Conference, 2021.
“The community college has been instrumental to my success! A small college means small classes, instructors who know you and are personally rooting for you! With the option of online classes, SKYCTC has been an ideal fit to work into my busy lifestyle. I found the atmosphere welcoming, inclusive, and positive”, said Margaret.
Margaret has nothing but good things to say about her instructors. “I have had numerous excellent instructors who have gone above and beyond for their students. One of those that stand out to me is Carmen Gaskins. She is certainly deserving of awards for her commitment to her students! She has invested a lot into each one, and is always available to help, even outside of classwork. I give her full credit for successfully preparing me to launch my career in Information Technology. I consider myself fortunate to have gotten the opportunity to learn from great mentors such as herself. “
“Thanks to the efforts from my instructors, I earned a spot on the President’s List and Dean’s List each semester. I was presented the opportunity to join the IT department on campus as a student worker. The groundwork learned in my classes has been pivotal in teaching me skills useful for this role. Recently, I have been collaborating on an upcoming virtual event which is KYCC Women in Computing. I have made so many new connections and learned that good things happen when I step out of my comfort zone, which was not an easy lesson for this quiet, introverted soul.”
Margaret says she thoroughly enjoyed her time here at college and is thankful for all she has learned so far. “I’m excited to continue my education at Western Governor’s University this fall. Without SKYCTC, my dreams would not yet be a reality!”
Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College congratulates Margaret Hostetler for being selected the SKYCTC Student of the Semester! We look forward to following her future plans to continue her education upon graduation from SKYCTC and attend Western Governors University.
