SKYCTC Students take home awards at FBLA National Leadership Conference

SKYCTC could not be prouder of these five young ladies in the FBLA Collegiate organization who traveled to Atlanta, GA June 22-25 and competed against students around the nation in the annual National Leadership Conference. Members of Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College’s (SKYCTC) FBLA Collegiate organization traveled to Atlanta, GA June 22-25 and competed against students around the nation in the annual National Leadership Conference. Each student qualified to compete at nationals in March at the state conference. Students were required to raise money to assist in funding the trip to Atlanta. The group of students raised around $3,000 and worked numerous hours preparing for their competitive event.
The group is very proud to announce the following winners:
- 1st Place - Organizational Communication & Leadership - Maryan Mohamed
- 5th Place - Management Concepts – Maryan Mohamed
- 10th Place - Business Presentation – Magdalena Ramirez and Makhya Taylor
- Finalist - State of Chapter Presentation – Maryan Mohamed and Anjita Tamang
- The chapter was also recognized as a Gold Seal chapter at the conference.
“This group of young ladies have set the bar high for future FBLA Collegiate students,” said Kim Otto, chapter adviser. “For a community college to win first place in an event and place in the top 10 or be a finalist in other events is outstanding! We challenged each of them and set high standards, and they soared beyond our expectations.”
There was a total of 28 states represented at the conference with the majority being four-year universities.
When asked how she felt about placing first and fifth place in the nation in her respective events, Maryan Mohamed stated, “I didn’t expect that I would win first place. I was just happy to have made it to the top 10. I am proud to have made it that far while representing SKYCTC and the state of Kentucky. It felt great to be first in the nation. It shows that if you push yourself and try hard enough, you will be able to accomplish your dreams. Joining FBLA Collegiate was a great choice for me. I’ve gained many leadership skills, I learned to get out of my comfort zone, and I’m proud to have made it this far. I will always be grateful for joining and being a part of a great team and having two amazing teachers/advisers, Ms. Otto and Ms. Dent, by my side.”
