BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Originally from Athens, Georgia, Alex Smith relocated to Bowling Green in 2016, unsure of what the future held. Initially hesitant about pursuing higher education, Alex's journey was marked by self-doubt and personal challenges. However, everything changed when he found a supportive community at Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKYCTC). With the encouragement of faculty and staff, Alex overcame his uncertainty, and today, he is a dynamic leader both on and off campus.

Currently a part-time student working toward his Associate in Arts degree, Alex aspires to transfer to a four-year institution to pursue a degree in Law, with a focus on Criminal Prosecution. His ambition is mirrored by his dedication to student leadership, where he has taken on multiple roles in which he works to promote academic excellence, foster community engagement, and advocate for the student body.

In addition to his academic and leadership commitments, Alex serves in the U.S. Army National Guard as a Military Police officer. This dual commitment to national service and personal development exemplifies his deep passion for making a meaningful impact in the community. Reflecting on his experience in the National Guard, Alex notes that it has shaped his approach to adversity and strengthened his passion for leadership.

“Enrolling in college as a non-traditional student can be daunting,” Alex shares. “Balancing a full-time job, college, and extracurricular activities is not easy, so time management is key to success. However, coming into the classroom with real-life experience gives me a sense of purpose and a unique perspective.”

Alex’s decision to enroll at SKYCTC was driven by his desire for self-improvement. He credits the Veterans Upward Bound program for helping him navigate financial aid and prepare for college. Today, alongside his studies and service, Alex holds several leadership positions, including Regional Vice President for Phi Theta Kappa, Vice President of the Student Government Association, and Student Ambassador. He also serves as the student representative on the SKYCTC Board of Directors.

“There’s a real sense of community here at SKYCTC,” Alex says. “The professors don’t just ask how your classes are going; they genuinely care about how you’re doing as a person.”

Looking to the future, Alex plans to pursue a career in law, with the goal of eventually entering private practice or working with a law firm. His journey from uncertainty to leadership is a powerful example of resilience, support, and perseverance. Alex continues to inspire his peers, encouraging others to embrace growth, leadership, and the importance of giving back.
