SKYCTC Names Brittany Austin as the Distinguished Alumni of the Year

Bowling Green, Kentucky, [May 7, 2024] - Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKYCTC) is proud to announce Brittany Austin as the recipient of the prestigious Distinguished Alumni Award for the year 2024. Each year, SKYCTC selects a Distinguished Alumni Award recipient to honor graduates and former students who have demonstrated exceptional success in their professions and made significant contributions to their communities.

With thousands of alumni making notable impacts across various industries in South Central Kentucky and beyond, Brittany's achievements stand out as exemplary of the transformative power of a community college education.

Brittany, also known as Brita, graduated from SKYCTC in 2013 with dual degrees, an Associate in Arts and an Associate in Science. Building upon her foundation at SKYCTC, she furthered her education at Western Kentucky University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 2015 and a Master of Science degree in 2018.

Throughout her career, Brita has emerged as a leader and innovator in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Leveraging her expertise, she founded Maps + Apps, spearheading impactful projects, and delivering outstanding results across diverse sectors and geographic areas. Her work has included creating applications for interactive scientific exhibits in Virginia, partnering on grant work for stormwater projects in Texas, tracking GMO mosquitoes in the Keys, supporting community organizations in Memphis, monitoring sea turtles in Dominica, providing expert data for litigation in Singapore, and supporting environmental and emergency management initiatives nationwide and globally.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Brita is deeply committed to community service and environmental advocacy. As a Kentucky Colonel and AmeriCorps alumna, she exemplifies the values of service and civic engagement. Her contributions to organizations like Oxitec and EarthDay.org, where she applied GIS technology to enhance mapping capabilities and data collection, underscore her dedication to leveraging technology for the greater good.

Brita's career is marked by a dedication to excellence, innovation, and community impact. Her work not only advances the field of GIS but also fosters community engagement and environmental stewardship. Through her outstanding achievements, Brita has left an indelible mark on her profession and community, making her a deserving recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award.
