Bowling Green, KY – Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKYCTC) will recognize over 400 candidates for graduation at its Spring Commencement Ceremonies on Friday, May 9, 2025. The ceremonies will be held at the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center (SKyPAC), with two sessions scheduled at 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to accommodate all graduates.

SKYCTC will confer diplomas, and associate degrees to students who have worked diligently to reach this significant milestone. Each graduate brings a unique and inspiring story of perseverance, ambition, and personal triumph.

Among the graduates is Mary Schalk, a 20-year-old licensed commercial pilot and marketing director, who has earned two associate degrees and four certificates—all while working and flying across Western Kentucky.

Abigail Johns, a home school student, and Emma Sanders, a student at Hart County High School, will each graduate from SKYCTC the same month they graduate from high school, having completed college-level coursework through the dual credit program.

Kasey York (attending the 5:00 p.m. ceremony), a 40-year-old first-generation college graduate who has overcome multiple barriers in her life to reach this goal, will also walk the stage.  “I celebrated four years clean and sober,” York shared. “I am transferring to Western Kentucky University in the fall to pursue my degree in Social Work. I want to help others who struggle like I did. My past does not define me, but it absolutely fuels me.”

Also being honored at the ceremonies will be the SKYCTC Distinguished Alumni of the Year Chris Lockhart. Lockhart exemplifies leadership, community service, and entrepreneurial spirit. A two-time graduate of SKYCTC, Chris earned an Information Technology degree in 2012 and an Associate in Arts degree in 2020.

A driven entrepreneur, Chris recognized a need for convenient, on-site automotive maintenance and launched PitStop Mobile Oil Change in July 2023. What began as a practical solution to busy schedules has grown into a thriving business that not only serves customers across the region but also gives back. Through PitStop, Chris has formed partnerships with and provided support to a wide range of local nonprofits and community organizations, including the BGWC Humane Society, Hotel Inc., BRAWA, and others.

He and his wife are also foster parents who adopted their two children last year. Chris’s commitment to service, innovation, and family reflects the values and impact celebrated by the SKYCTC Distinguished Alumni Award.

“We honor each of our graduates for the hard work they put forth to achieve their career goals,” said Dr. Brooke Justice, Interim President of SKYCTC. “We also pay tribute to the family and friends for their support, and to the SKYCTC faculty and staff for their commitment to student success.”

Graduates are well-prepared for the next chapter of their journey. Many will enter the workforce in local healthcare facilities, businesses, industries, and organizations throughout South Central Kentucky, while others will continue their education at four-year institutions.

Both commencement ceremonies will be streamed live on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SKYCTC.
