SKYCTC Shines a Light on Opportunity During Financial Aid Awareness Month
February is often associated with fresh starts and forward momentum, making it the perfect time to focus on one of the most important steps in achieving educational goals—financial aid. Each year, February is recognized as Financial Aid Awareness Month, a time dedicated to helping students and families understand the resources available to make college more affordable and accessible.
For many prospective and current students, the cost of college can feel overwhelming. Tuition, books, transportation, and living expenses can add up quickly, sometimes creating the false impression that higher education is out of reach. Financial Aid Awareness Month works to change that narrative by highlighting the wide range of assistance available, including grants, scholarships, work-study opportunities, and low-interest loans.
A key focus of the month is encouraging students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is the gateway to federal and state aid, as well as many institutional scholarships. Yet, thousands of eligible students miss out on financial support each year simply because they do not apply. By raising awareness and offering guidance, colleges and universities aim to remove confusion and empower students to take this critical step.
Throughout February, financial aid offices across the country host workshops, one-on-one advising sessions, and outreach events to answer questions and provide hands-on help. These efforts are especially important for first-generation college students and families who may be navigating the financial aid process for the first time.
Financial Aid Awareness Month is ultimately about more than forms and deadlines—it’s about opportunity. It’s about opening doors, reducing barriers, and reminding students that investing in their education is possible with the right information and support. As February unfolds, students are encouraged to ask questions, explore their options, and take advantage of the resources designed to help them succeed—because a brighter future often begins with knowing where to find help.
