FRANKLIN, Ky. – Students at South Central Kentucky Community and Technical College, or SKYCTC, took part in what’s called a Going Pro Day, where they officially commit to the workforce.

The Going Pro Day on Wednesday is one of many the college is doing to recognize the students officially finishing up their schooling and joining local companies. The Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education students signed their first professional contracts in the workforce, some of whom signing with companies they’ve worked for previously.

“We recognize college. We recognize pro athletes, a lot of other things, and this is just a chance to say we recognize that you have accomplished a lot in your education. Now you’re entering the professional career. We want to take the chance to recognize that for the students’ sake and also as a thank you to the employers that are hiring those students,” Dr. Kim Myers, dean of workforce solutions at SKYCTC, says.

Two of the students who signed their first pro contracts with Logan Aluminum and Delta Faucet are excited to return to places they’re very familiar with.

“It’s definitely pretty neat, especially since I’ve been there for several years and I know the culture, I know the people and to be able to come back and continue to work there,” Connor Williams, who signed with Logan Aluminum, says.

“It’s really reassuring, especially to know that they’re working so well in hand with the school to try to get you career ready, as well as have that career spot open for you. So there’s like no turmoil trying to figure out what I’m going to do once I graduate with what I have. So it’s really nice,” Calvin Crandell, who signed with Delta Faucet, says.

Both Williams and Crandell are grateful to SKYCTC and their respective programs for helping them get pro ready.

“SKYCTC has been really gear oriented towards having all their students ready for graduation as far as what they can do to have you career path ready, so it’s really motivating to help the student succeed at the workplace rather than just in the classroom. So it does help. It’s a big difference,” Crandell says.

“I feel like, very important, especially in our field of work, things are changing all the time, and with that, the program has helped us in being able to adapt to those changes and different parts of technology through the program,” Williams says.

Myers says having employers on hand shows the two way relationship forming.

“It may look symbolic in a lot of ways, but it’s a true recognition for those students that ‘Hey, this is your next step.’ You’re making a commitment to an employer, but that employer’s making a commitment to you as well, and then just to sort of bring it all together into that combination, I think is very important,” she says.

A huge congratulations to all students who signed!
