Bowling Green, KY – Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKYCTC) is proud to highlight the accomplishments of 2024 Medical Information Technology graduate Shamyra Matheos, whose dedication to education and professional growth is already making a meaningful impact in the healthcare field.

Matheos completed the Medical Information Technology program at SKYCTC in 2024 and has continued building her future by transferring to Southern New Hampshire University to pursue a bachelor’s degree.

Currently, Matheos serves as a Physician Practice Coder with Med Center Health, where she applies the skills and knowledge gained during her studies to support patient care and healthcare operations. In addition to her professional responsibilities, she demonstrates strong leadership in the healthcare coding community as the current President of the Barren River Local Chapter of the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).

Matheos said she chose SKYCTC because of the flexibility the college offered.

“I loved how flexible the training and education was,” Matheos said. “I was able to take online classes, and I had heard many wonderful reviews about SKYCTC.”

During her time at the college, Matheos credits faculty members Dr. White and Professor Amy Norrod as key influences who helped guide and support her academic journey.

Today, Matheos is pursuing a career path in medical billing and coding and says her education at SKYCTC prepared her well for the profession.

“SKYCTC helped prepare me for my career by providing resources like printing services and career events,” she said. “The college provided all the classes I needed and great professors who showed me the next steps and what I needed to be successful.”

Matheos encourages current students to stay committed to their goals and take full advantage of the opportunities available to them.

“My advice would be to just do the work,” she said. “It doesn’t have to be perfect as long as you try. Make a plan and stick to it. Reach out to your professors and communicate often, and I promise you’ll succeed. Attend functions because that will allow you to make wonderful connections.”

She also encourages those considering a career in medical billing and coding to pursue the field.

“Do it,” Matheos said. “It will be the best decision of your life. There are several opportunities, and the path leads to many outlets of success.”

Matheos’ journey reflects determination, leadership, and a commitment to lifelong learning—qualities that embody the mission and values of SKYCTC. The college looks forward to seeing all that she accomplishes in the years ahead.
