America 250 in the Constitution: Exploring the Foundations of American Freedom

As the nation prepares to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKYCTC) is encouraging faculty, staff and students to take time to explore the documents that helped establish the United States and define the freedoms enjoyed by Americans today.
In preparation for Constitution Day Thursday, September 17, 2026, SKYCTC History Professor Barry Kennedy presents a video program, “America 250 in the Constitution,” examining the important role the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution have played in shaping the nation’s history and government.
In his presentation, Kennedy discusses the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, with particular emphasis on the rights and freedoms outlined in these foundational documents. The presentation provides an opportunity to consider how the principles established more than two centuries ago continue to influence American life and the rights of citizens today.
The Declaration of Independence, adopted in 1776, announced the colonies’ decision to separate from Great Britain and articulated fundamental principles concerning equality, liberty and individual rights. The Constitution, written and ratified in the years that followed, established the framework for the federal government and continues to serve as the foundation of the nation’s system of government.
Together, these documents offer important insight into the origins of American democracy and the principles upon which the nation was founded.
As part of SKYCTC’s recognition of America 250, faculty, staff and students are encouraged to view Kennedy’s presentation as an opportunity to learn more about the Constitution, reflect on the rights it protects and gain a deeper understanding of the nation’s history.
