BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Cybersecurity can be a complicated topic for people who do not work in the industry, but on Tuesday, some professionals at SKYCTC held a panel to try and help residents.
Multiple professionals across different sectors of cyber security discussed the dangers and safety precautions residents should take.
They addressed the perspectives of an everyday individual, businesses and corporations outlining the differences in how bad actors try and find information.
All panelists agreed on one major point: taking a proactive approach in protecting your information.
“So if you’re at home, that’s your home network. That’s going to be your responsibility to secure. And if you have a small medium business, that’s also going to be your responsibility to secure your own networks. There is a certain amount of national security effort. But that’s not necessarily to defend your network against specific cyber attacks. So it’s really important for everyone to realize they are the front line, and they need to educate themselves on what they need to do,” said John Gilbert, a panelist and computer and IT instructor with SKYCTC.
For one graduate of SKYCTC’s program, he recognizes the challenges everyday people face when it comes to protecting your information, especially with the fast-evolving nature of technology.
“It’s very fast evolving and it could be evolving in many different fashions. You know, being software, AI is a really big one right now and being aware of how to use it and the threats that are out there and how bad actors are using it protects us,” said SKYCTC graduate Roberto Amador.
If you we unable to attend the day’s talks, professionals say that there are a few things you can do to protect yourself from the bad guys online.
One is to simply use different passwords for all of your online profiles, second and more importantly, utilize two factor authentication.
