Bowling Green, Ky. – The Beta Upsilon Alpha chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College has earned second place in the regional competition for its College Project, recognizing the chapter’s commitment to student success, engagement and service.

The award-winning project, led by chapter Vice President Harper Osborne, focused on providing students with practical life skills through a hands-on cooking class initiative. The program was designed to teach participants how to prepare simple, low-cost meals while promoting confidence and independence in the kitchen.

During the event, students learned to cook affordable recipes and were provided with groceries to recreate the meals on their own. The initiative emphasized that nutritious, satisfying meals can be prepared on a budget while also fostering a sense of community among participants.

“The more you put into Phi Theta Kappa, the more you get out of it,” Osborne said.

Osborne, who serves as Vice President of the Beta Upsilon Alpha chapter, said the project reflects both the mission of Phi Theta Kappa and the supportive environment at SKYCTC.

“I chose Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College because of the environment and the inviting campus,” Osborne said. “It felt like a welcoming place where students can feel comfortable and supported while working toward their educational goals.”

Osborne joined Phi Theta Kappa after being encouraged by peers who spoke highly of their experiences in the organization.

“It seemed like a fun opportunity to participate in campus activities while being part of an organization that encourages leadership, service and academic success,” Osborne said.

Currently pursuing an Associate in Arts degree at SKYCTC, Osborne plans to transfer to Western Kentucky University to continue studies in social work.

The Beta Upsilon Alpha chapter’s recognition highlights the impact of student-led initiatives that address real-world challenges while strengthening campus connections and leadership development.
