SKYCTC Presents “Substantial Doubt” Sculpture Exhibition Featuring Donated Works by Brent Oglesbee

Art Sculptures by Brent Oglesbee

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKYCTC) is showcasing the intersection of art, technology and contemporary culture through Substantial Doubt, a special pop-up exhibition featuring sculptures donated by artist and educator Brent Oglesbee.

The exhibition, on display October 12–23, 2026, at the Laura Goad Turner Charitable Foundation Art Gallery, features a selection of Oglesbee's sculptural works that will eventually be distributed to SKYCTC campuses, expanding opportunities for students, faculty, staff and visitors to experience original artwork throughout the college.

Oglesbee, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Art & Design at Western Kentucky University (WKU), studied at Pennsylvania State University. His work explores the relationship between human expectations and the realities of modern technological and mechanical systems.

Through sculptures that appear to reflect the precision, productivity and efficiency associated with machinery, Oglesbee encourages viewers to look beyond the surface and question whether technology always delivers on its promises.

“'Substantial Doubt' is a phrase I find useful for describing my artistic process and intent,” Oglesbee explained in his artist statement. “My sculptures lean toward fabrications that mimic the productivity, clarity, and efficiency promised us by mechanical/technological systems.”

However, the artist deliberately introduces unexpected elements that challenge those expectations.

“Within these works there are contradictions, seeming dislocations, omissions, or evidence of dubious output that undercut this optimism,” Oglesbee said. “The specifics then lend doubt to the larger proposition.”

Oglesbee describes his sculptures as visual expressions of the differences between society's ambitions and the outcomes of contemporary life.

“The results are my attempt to visually suggest the disparities I sense between the aspirations and actual results of contemporary culture,” he said.

The exhibition provides an opportunity for viewers to consider the connections between artistic expression, innovation and the role of technology in everyday life. By combining mechanical imagery with unexpected visual elements, Oglesbee invites audiences to explore how art can challenge assumptions and encourage critical thinking.

The donation also represents a lasting contribution to SKYCTC's growing commitment to the arts. Following the pop-up exhibition, the sculptures will be placed at various SKYCTC campuses, allowing the works to become part of the college's educational environment and providing opportunities for continued appreciation and discussion.

The Substantial Doubt exhibition will remain on display through October 23, 2026, at the Laura Goad Turner Charitable Foundation Art Gallery, located in the Robert and Mary Tincher Campus and Community Center on SKYCTC's Main Campus at 1845 Loop Drive in Bowling Green.
