Radiography Additional Information

The clinical education coursework helps to integrate the classroom or theory aspect with the performance aspect of the Radiography Program. Clinical education involves three phases: observation, assistance, and performance.

The student begins clinical education by observing activities within the Department of Radiology. These activities include those of the staff radiographer as well as those of support personnel in the department. After observation, the student will then begin to assist staff members. The rate at which the student progress is dependent upon the ability of the student to comprehend and perform the various assigned tasks.

During the student’s clinical education, their performance is evaluated by the clinical instructors on an ongoing basis. The student is evaluated on specific radiographic examinations as well as their overall performance.

Midterm conferences will be scheduled with the clinical coordinator during each semester to review the student’s progress and standing. A final conference at the end of each semester will be scheduled with the clinical coordinator.

Clinical education begins with the second bi-term of the student’s first semester. An integral part of the clinical education system is accurate record keeping and performance of assigned activities. It is the complete responsibility of the student to turn in their assignments on time. Failure to do this can result in a low grade or possible failure.

Radiography students will be scheduled in clinical education centers by the Clinical Coordinator. Rotation schedules are based on the clinical education plan. Schedules are distributed to students by the fourteenth week of the preceding semester. Should a scheduled rotation not be available, the Clinical Coordinator or Clinical Instructor will assign the student to an educationally valid rotation.

Some travel will be required to out-of-town clinical sites in order to provide the student with a well-rounded clinical experience. Students may not choose their clinical sites; rather the Clinical Coordinator makes all clinical assignments. Currently, clinical affiliates are: The Medical Center at Bowling Green, TriStar Greenview Regional Hospital, TJ Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow, Logan Memorial Hospital in Russellville, Western Kentucky Diagnostic Imaging Center – MC Health in Bowling Green, The Medical Center at Caverna in Horse Cave, Graves Gilbert Clinic in Bowling Green, Monroe County Medical Center in Tompkinsville, T. J. Health Pavilion in Glasgow, The Medical Center at Scottsville, and The Medical Center at Franklin. It is possible this list can change in the future.

Clinical rotations consist of day and evening assignments. Each student in the program is required to complete at least two rotations of evening assignments. A rotation consists of two calendar weeks.

Drug-Free Policy - Drug Testing

KCTCS is committed to providing a safe environment for students, faculty, and staff. KCTCS is a drug-free facility. The following policies apply:

Being under the influence of alcohol or other drugs or the use, possession, distribution, manufacture, or sale of illegal or unauthorized drugs is prohibited and is punishable as a felony offense on campus or within 1,000 yards of the campus. Conduct that violates this definition, poses unacceptable risks, and disregards the health, safety, and welfare of members of the KCTCS college community shall result in disciplinary action up to and including suspension or termination. KCTCS colleges are in compliance with the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act Amendment of 1989. “Campus” includes classrooms, laboratories, and clinical settings. Some clinical areas require drug tests. A student may be assigned to a clinical facility that makes this a requirement. Students must supply a list of any and every prescription and/or over-the-counter medication at the time of testing. During the student’s clinical rotation, a facility or instructor may request a blood or urine test at any time at the student’s expense. Failure to comply with the request of the clinical facility will result in dismissal from the program. Students, whose drug test results are positive, in accordance with the KCTCS Code of Student Conduct, will be removed from clinical and dropped from the program. FAILURE to submit to a drug test at any time will result in automatic dismissal from the program. All students are required to have a 10 panel drug screen completed with Certified Background before the student can do the clinical observation. Do not assume the results will be readily available. The cost of the drug screen is the student’s responsibility. If the student fails the drug screen or fails to submit to a drug screen, the student will be dismissed from the Radiography program.

Background Checks

All students are required to have a background check completed with Certified Background before the student can do the clinical observation. The cost of the background check is the student’s responsibility. If the student fails a criminal background check or if the student fails to submit to a criminal background check, the student may be dismissed from the Radiography program.

Immunizations

All students are required to be up to date on their immunizations as required by the clinical affiliates. The Clinical Facilities may refuse to allow or may terminate ongoing participation of any College student who fails to meet these requirements. The cost of the immunizations is the student's responsibility.

Radiography Program Grading Scale

The Radiography program grading scale does not align with the SKYCTC General Education Grading scale. Below is the grading scale that is used by the Radiography Program.

93-100 A
84-92 B
75-83 C * 75% or above is required (Didactic and Clinically) to sustain you spot in the program.
70-74 D
0-69 F

National Board Exam

In order to complete one’s education and become licensed in Radiographer a graduate must take a National board exam. If a candidate has a previous criminal record not limited to but to include

Felony charges and conviction
Misdemeanor charges and convictions
Military court-martials; and/or
Disciplinary actions taken by a state or federal regulatory authority or certification board; and/or
Honor code violation

If for any reason a student has a misdemeanor or felony charge, they may not be able to attend clinical and/or sit for their National registry examination. It is recommended that if this applies to a person applying to the program, they should discuss this matter with the program director. Student Discrimination and Grievance Procedures

The Kentucky Community and Technical College System has zero tolerance for illegal discrimination of any kind. Any student who thinks he/she may have been discriminated against or subjected to harassment by students or employees because of his or her race, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, religion, beliefs, political affiliation, veteran status, age, or disability (including denial of a request for an accommodation), has the right to pursue an informal and/or formal discrimination grievance. The informal student discrimination grievance procedure is described below. Most difficulties can be resolved by talking to someone. Therefore, students are encouraged to discuss these problems promptly and candidly with the Director of Student Life and Engagement.

If a student thinks that he/she has been discriminated against, the student shall inform the Director of Student Life and Engagement within thirty (30) calendar days of the alleged incident. The Director of Student Life and Engagement shall conduct a preliminary investigation of the discrimination grievance.
The student, Director of Student Life and Engagement, and the other involved parties shall work informally to negotiate a solution within fourteen (14) calendar days. The informal student discrimination grievance procedure shall be completed within forty-four (44) calendar days of the alleged incident.
If the grievance is not resolved to the satisfaction of the student through the informal grievance procedure, the student may file a formal appeal according to the KCTCS Code of Student Conduct located on the KCTCS website.

Radiography Program Complaint Resolution Policy

If a student, faculty, or community of interest feels that the program is not in compliance with the JRCERT Standards, they are requested to notify the program director in writing of any allegations or complaints.

The program director will investigate the complaint and will answer the complainant within 5 school days. (Days can be changed by agreement of both parties).

If the complainant is not satisfied with the response, they should notify the Dean of the Allied Health and Nursing Division. They will investigate and respond to the complainant within 10 school days.

If the complainant is not satisfied with the response, they should notify the Provost. They will investigate and respond to the complainant within 10 school days.
