    Technical Standards

     

    Surgical Technology involves the provision of direct care for individuals and is characterized by the application of verified knowledge in the skillful performance of surgical technology technical functions. Therefore, all applicants should possess sufficient:

    1. visual acuity, such as is needed in the surgical environment and for the observation necessary for patient assessment and care;
    2. auditory perception to receive verbal communication from patients and members of the health team and to assess health needs of people through the use of monitoring devices (e.g., cardiac monitors, biomedical equipment, fire alarms, etc.);
    3. gross and fine motor coordination to respond promptly and to implement the skills, including the manipulation of equipment, positioning and lifting patients required in meeting health needs related to surgical technology;
    4. verbal and non-verbal communication skills (speech, reading, and writing), such as are needed in classroom and clinical settings to interact with patients and professional personnel; and
    5. intellectual and emotional functions to plan and implement care for individuals

    Selective Admission Process

    This program has a selective admission process. Students must first be admitted to the college and complete all required prerequisite courses. After meeting these requirements, students may submit an application to the program for consideration. Admission is competitive and is not guaranteed upon completion of prerequisite coursework.

    Steps to apply for the surgical technology program to be completed in this order:

    1. First, apply to SKYCTC.
    2. Request all transcripts be sent to SKYCTC.
    3. Once you have been admitted to SKYCTC, you will receive information on how to connect with an advisor through the Advising and Transfer Center. Your advisor will discuss new student orientation, your intended Allied Health program, prerequisite courses, and the next steps toward applying to your Allied Health program. The prerequisite courses for the surgical technology program can be found in the KCTCS Course Catalog.
    4. Upon registration and/or all pre-requisite courses, you will meet with an advisor in the Surgical Technology program. At this meeting, the advisor will provide information about the program, as well as information on how to apply to the program and how to register to take the TEAS exam. All applicants should review the job description and technical standards to ensure they can adequately perform the duties. Please note that applications must be submitted early enough to allow time to take the TEAS exam.
    5. Take the TEAS exam in person at SKYCTC or another KCTCS college. Online exam results are not accepted. To view the list of KCTCS colleges, you can view them here. A minimum score of 40 must be achieved to be eligible to apply to the Surgical Technology Program. The TEAS exam can be taken only once every 6 months, and the results are valid for 2 years.

    The TEAS exam will be offered in-person at SKYCTC on the following dates:

    Applicants will be notified of their acceptance by the last week of May. Students must accept their spot in the program by June 1. Directions will be provided in the acceptance letters. Students who are not accepted into the program will be notified by the last week of May. Students who are accepted into the program must attend a mandatory orientation within the first 2 weeks of June.
